The Los Angeles Times is leaving its historic home in downtown L.A. as it transitions to new ownership under Dr.

A bid to gain protected status for three Los Angeles Times buildings moved forward Thursday when the Cultural Heritage Commission agreed to consider an application to make them historic-cultural monuments.

A building in Los Angeles can be granted monument status if it is “associated with the lives of historic personages important to national, state, city or local history” or if it “embodies the distinctive characteristics of a style, type, period” or “represents a notable work of a master designer.”

After nearly a century, The Times is moving out of its storied complex in downtown Los Angeles for sleek new digs in El Segundo.

To me, the Los Angeles Times building has always looked like a gigantic tombstone.
