A 41-year-old driver faces possible criminal charges after U.S. Border Patrol agents in San Ysidro discovered two Mexican nationals dead in the trunk of his car, which officials referred to as a “smuggling incident.”
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent trained in CPR tried to revive the two men -- a 28-year-old and a 20-year-old -- but was unsuccessful. They were declared dead after being rushed to local hospitals.
The men were discovered about 2:30 p.m. after a Customs and Border Protection agent, suspecting something was amiss with the 2012 Dodge Challenger, ordered the car to pass through an imaging system, which spotted an “anomaly” in the trunk.
An agent then opened the trunk and found the two.
