Photo15 auction to benefit AIDS monument in West Hollywood
On Thursday, Hollywood actress and AIDS philanthropist Sharon Stone will host Photo15, an auction of over 80 photographs by actors (Dennis Hopper and The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus) musicians (Lenny Kravitz) artists (Ed Ruscha) and legends including William Wegman, Herb Ritts and acclaimed architectural photographer Julius Shulman. Proceeds will benefit a national AIDS Monument in West Hollywood Park scheduled for 2017 as part of the City of West Hollywood’s $85-million overhaul of a public park on San Vicente Boulevard.
The proposed AIDS Monument, as shown in this computer animation, is the brainchild of Daniel Tobin, a co-founder of Urban Art Projects, a Brisbane, Australia, firm that specializes in architect- and artist-designed public works. Conceived as a sculptural installation with integrated technology that allows visitors to upload their own multimedia memorials for lost loved ones, it will also serve as a public resource center providing links to information on HIV/AIDS prevention.
Among the highlights of the auction: A midcentury Ed Ruscha streetscape, a Dennis Hopper self-portrait and an Arthur Elgort photograph of famed fashion model Gia Carangi, who died of AIDS related complications at age 26. The event takes place at Milk Studios on Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. and online bidding is available on Paddle 8.
