The loopholes that help bad habits block happiness

Habits can make or break happiness, says Gretchen Rubin, the author of ā€œThe Happiness Project.ā€ Habits, she says, are ā€œthe invisible architecture of everyday life and a significant element of happiness.ā€

The No. 1 habit change that people say makes them happier is to make their bed, says Rubin, whose book on habits, ā€œBetter Than Before,ā€ comes out next year. ā€œIt sounds silly, but people keep telling me this all the time.ā€

Rubin says often the reasons why people fail ā€” even at major efforts such as diet or exercise ā€” is not a matter of willpower but a product of almost magical thinking, searching for and finding loopholes, those justifications that will excuse us from maintaining this particular habit in this particular situation.

But Rubin says that when we spot the loophole, we can try to reject the desire to let ourselves off the hook. ā€œI know itā€™s not easy. I use loopholes myself!ā€

Here are Rubinā€™s top loopholes; perhaps theyā€™re familiar to you.

1. False choice loophole: ā€œI canā€™t do this because Iā€™m so busy doing that.ā€

2. Moral licensing loophole: ā€œIā€™ve been so good, itā€™s OK for me to do this.ā€

3. Tomorrow loophole: ā€œItā€™s OK to skip today because Iā€™m going to do this tomorrow.ā€

4. Lack-of-control loophole: ā€œI canā€™t help myself.ā€

5. Planning-to-fail loophole: ā€œIā€™ll just check my email quickly before I go to the gym ā€¦ oops, I donā€™t have time to go to the gym, after all.ā€ Or, ā€œIā€™m not going to eat anything more tonight, but Iā€™ll go into the kitchen and look in the freezer. Just curious.ā€

6. This-doesnā€™t-count loophole: ā€œIā€™m on vacation.ā€ ā€œIā€™m sick.ā€ ā€œItā€™s the weekend.ā€

7. Questionable-assumption loophole: ā€œItā€™s not a proper dinner without wine.ā€ Or, ā€œItā€™s more fun to play tennis than go to the gym. I can wait.ā€

8. Concern-for-others loophole: ā€œI canā€™t do this because it might make other people uncomfortable.ā€

9. Fake self-actualization loophole: ā€œYou only live once! Embrace the moment!ā€

10. One-time loophole: ā€œWhat difference does it make if I break my habit this one time?ā€
