Long before the red carpet became a barometer of glamour, Gold Rush wealth fired the sartorial passions of the Victorian-era nouveau riche in California. Out of the Wild West a new class of sophisticates emerged, collecting art and the latest fashions. A new exhibition at the Autry Museum showcases these fabulous clothes, including a claret-colored satin and velvet evening dress from 1883 with hand-wrought details on the buttons, alongside period antiques and paintings of frontier living by Grace Carpenter Hudson, William Keith and Albert Bierstadt.
