GQ announces best new menswear designers in America for 2014
GQ magazine recently announced its 2014 best new menswear designers in America, a list on which Los Angeles is more than well represented.
The quartet that makes up the class of 2014 includes two L.A.-based labels -- John Elliot’s skate-culture-influenced John Elliot + Co. and John Moore’s retro-surf brand M.Nii. And Rob Garcia’s En Noir, a dark take on streetwear, has a presence on both coasts, with a showroom in New York and production space in L.A.
Rounding out the 2014 foursome is Brooklyn Tailors’ Daniel Lewis, suit maker for the Williamsburg set.
Launched in 2007, GQ’s best new menswear designers in America program has recognized the likes of Engineered Garments’ designer Daiki Suzuki (2008), Robert Geller (2009), Billy Reid (2010) and Alexander Wang (2011).
Starting in 2012, the magazine shifted to a multiple-winner format, recognizing the designers of a half-dozen brands (BLK DNM, Ian Velardi, Mark McNairy New Amsterdam, Ovadia & Sons, Saturdays and Todd Snyder) followed by the class of 2013’s four-pack of Baldwin, Bespoken, Ernest Alexander and Paige Mycoskie’s Venice-based Aviator Nation label.
The honor from the men’s fashion and style glossy comes with some perks, including a GQ-led mentoring program and the opportunity to create pieces for a limited-edition Gap collection that will hit retail in the fall and appear in the magazine’s October issue.
The class of 2014 will also appear -- wearing their wares no less -- in the April GQ, which is scheduled to hit newsstands Tuesday.
