ENCINITAS — A 22-year-old man found critically injured after falling from a bluff in Leucadia, south of Beacon’s Beach, died Thursday morning.
A person walking on the beach found Ian Barry at the bottom of the 80- to 100-foot cliff about 3:20 a.m., authorities said.
The man had climbed a fence at the foot of North El Portal Street where some of his belongings were later found, Encinitas Marine Safety Capt. Larry Giles said.
The area is clearly marked with signs warning people to stay off of the bluffs, Giles said.
Barry was unconscious when authorities arrived. Rescuers wanted to airlift him to a hospital but were unable due to the foggy conditions, Giles said.
It is not known what time Barry fell because there were no witnesses, Giles said.
The man died at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla at 7:28 a.m., the county Medical Examiner’s Office said. The office released his name and said an autopsy is pending.
Barry lived in Encinitas with his parents, the office said.
