A 20-year-old woman was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison Wednesday in the stabbing death of a National City teenager.

Antoinette Latrice Dokes was convicted of second-degree murder in Chula Vista Superior Court in the fight that killed Justine Brown, 18, on April 17, 2009.

Prosecutors said that Dokes and co-defendant Rachel Elizabeth Wheelis had become friendly with the victim’s ex-boyfriend and his best friend, and they were hoping to move into his apartment.

On the day of the slaying, the victim ran into the two women at a credit union and instigated a shouting match. Dokes and Wheelis then went to a store and purchased a crowbar and knife, said Deputy District Attorney Greg McClain.

The pair went to Brown’s apartment on East Ninth Street near A Avenue and attacked Brown. At some point during the fight, Dokes stabbed Brown in the left side of her chest, authorities said.

She collapsed and later died.

Wheelis was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 11 years in prison at an earlier hearing.
