“The Good Wife†will be saying goodbye to its leaders.

New CBS entertainment chief Glenn Geller announced Tuesday that Robert and Michelle King will step down as showrunners of the Julianna Margulies-led legal drama after its current seventh season.

“The Kings did say they would not be returning after this year but we have a deep bench on the show,†Geller said when asked about the drama’s future during the network’s session at the Television Critics Assn. media tour in Pasadena.

There’s a logical reason for their exit, of course. The husband-and-wife team are busy working on launching a second series, the comic sci-fi thriller “BrainDead,†for the network this summer.

“BrainDead†follows a young Capitol Hill staffer who gets her first job in Washington only to discover that alien spawn have come to Earth and eaten the brains of a growing number of congressmen and staffers.

As to whether “The Good Wife†might also be saying goodbye, Geller was less committed to offering a firm answer just yet.

“It’s just January, so we haven’t determined if there will be another season [of ‘The Good Wife’] or not,†Geller said.
