Watch Iggy Pop and Josh Homme debut ‘Gardenia’ on ‘Colbert’

Just a day after Iggy Pop announced his new collaborative album with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Pop debuted its first single, “Gardenia,†Thursday on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.â€

Dressed in a low-buttoned black suit and looking like he just sauntered out of a hotel bar, Pop gave the song a relatively restrained and poignant performance. The single, from his wonderfully titled new album “Post Pop Depression,†continues the bleak, grooving moods from his great David Bowie collaborations, and it’s perhaps his catchiest new tune in a generation.

Homme was again happy to play the sideman here, offering little jabs of guitar and backing vocals but generally staying out of the way -- the only right decision with a singer such as Pop.

The two reunited for an interview with Colbert in which they described their secret recording sessions in Joshua Tree. They kept the conversation light -- Homme didn’t go into the Paris terrorist attacks at a concert by his other band, Eagles of Death Metal.

But he did describe what must have been a delightful session making “Post Pop Depression.†“It’s a wonderful experience to have Iggy as a roommate,†he said.

“To be such a huge fan of Iggy and see him in the morning in a kimono is like ... it’s just enough to leave something to the imagination, and I’ve got a really good imagination.â€
