‘Birdman,’ ‘Nightcrawler,’ ‘Selma’ lead indie Spirit Award nominations

Alejándro G. Iñárritu’s “Birdman†dominated the nominations Tuesday for the 30th Film Independent Spirit Awards, earning six -- for best film, director, lead actor for Michael Keaton, supporting actor for Edward Norton and supporting actress for Emma Stone.

Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood†earned five nominations: best film, director, editing, supporting actor for Ethan Hawke and supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.

Also earning five nominations were Dan Gilroy’s “Nightcrawler†and Ava DuVernay’s “Selma.†The former is up for best first feature, screenplay, editing, lead actor for Jake Gyllenhaal and supporting actor for Riz Ahmed. “Selma†is up for film, director, cinematography, lead actor for David Oyelowo and supporting actress for Carmen Ejogo.

Rounding out the best-feature nominees with “Birdman†(full title “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),†“Boyhood†and “Selma†are “Love Is Strange†and “Whiplash.â€

Joining DuVernay, Iñárritu and Linklater in the best director category are Damien Chazelle for “Whiplash†and David Zellner for “Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter.â€

Vying with Gyllenhaal, Keaton and Oyelowo for lead actor are Andre Benjamin for “Jimi: All Is By My Side†and John Lithgow for “Love Is Strange.â€

Lead-actress nominations went to Marion Cotillard for “The Immigrant,†Rinko Kikuchi for “Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter,†Julianne Moore for “Still Alice,†Jenny Slate for “Obvious Child†and Tilda Swinton for “Only Lovers Left Alive.â€

Besides Arquette, Stone and Ejogo, supporting-actress nominations went to Jessica Chastain for “A Most Violent Year†and Andrea Suarez Paz for “Stand Clear of the Closing Doors.â€

Joining Hawke, Norton and Ahmed in the supporting-actor category are Alfred Molina for “Love Is Strange†and J.K. Simmons for “Whiplash.â€

Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Inherent Vice†was named recipient of the Robert Altman Award, which is given to the film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast, and Bennett Miller’s “Foxcatcher†received a Special Distinction Award for its “uniqueness of vision, honesty of direction and screenwriting, superb acting and achievement on every level of filmmaking.â€

The Spirit Awards will be announced at a luncheon ceremony on the beach in Santa Monica on Feb. 21, the day before the Academy Awards.
