The film “Some Girl(s)” opened in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, but it is also the first feature to launch day and date using the Vimeo On Demand platform, available all around the world.

Daisy von Scherler Mayer directed the film, which Neil LaBute adapted from his own play. The story involves a man (Adam Brody) who, ahead of his impending marriage, visits a series of women from his past (played by Kristen Bell, Zoe Kazan, Emily Watson, Jennifer Morrison and Mia Maestro), mostly ex-girlfriends and former lovers. While it is unclear just what he wants from the series of encounters, each played out in a different hotel room, what is clear is that he treated none of these women well. From room to room his journey takes on a strange emotional momentum.

The film had its world premiere earlier this year at the South by Southwest Film Festival. Earlier this week, Brody, Morrison and Maestro were in attendance alongside Von Scherler Mayer and LaBute for the Los Angeles premiere of the film, presented with the Los Angeles Times Indie Focus Screening Series.

During a Q&A after the screening (moderated by this reporter), the filmmakers addressed having their film be the first feature to come out via Vimeo On Demand.

“It’s the future for audiences,” said Von Scherler Mayer, “that either don’t want to leave their house in New York City and go to the theater, or people who don’t live near an arthouse. These movies just aren’t making money, so if we’re going to make smart movies for smart audiences, we’re going to have to get these audiences that are watching ‘Mad Men’ and ‘House of Cards’ and things on TV all the time. We have to go to them.”

“I have become myself someone who sort of regulates movies that I’m going to see in the theater versus things I know I’ll see in a smaller format,” said LaBute. “And I’m quite happy with that.”

He added, “I think it makes complete sense. I’m not sure why it didn’t happen before.”
