New York Film Critics Circle announces awards dates

The New York Film Critics Circle’s members will vote and announce its winners for the best in cinema for 2013 on Dec. 3.

The group’s annual awards ceremony will take place Jan. 6, 2014, at the Edison Ballroom in New York City.

The group, which consists of critics from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and online publications, is often considered an Oscar bellwether. But according to its website, the awards are “also viewed -- perhaps more accurately -- as a principled alternative to the Oscars, honoring aesthetic merit in a forum that is immune to commercial and political pressures.â€

Last year’s winner was “Zero Dark Thirty,†while the Academy Award for best film went to “Argo.†Two years ago, the NYFCC and the Academy agreed on best picture winner “The Artist.â€

The Los Angeles Film Critics Assn. will reveal its choices Dec. 8.
