‘Logan’s Run’ remake seeks new future with Simon Kinberg
Writer-producer Simon Kinberg is making a run at “Logan’s Run,” Warner Bros.’ long-gestating remake of the 1976 sci-fi movie about a futuristic society with a serious case of Peter Pan syndrome.
The studio has enlisted Kinberg, best known as a steward of Fox’s “X-Men” franchise, to write the story and treatment for the movie, a person with knowledge of the project confirmed to The Times. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
Kinberg, who would also produce alongside Joel Silver, comes as the latest in a long line of filmmakers taking a crack at updating Michael Anderson’s dystopian thriller, itself based on the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton. Anderson’s movie followed a 29-year-old protagonist (played by Michael York) who bolts during his final days in a hedonistic domed city where people get vaporized on their 30th birthday.
Writers including Alex Garland (“Ex Machina”) and Christopher McQuarrie (“The Usual Suspects”) and directors such as Nicolas Winding Refn and Bryan Singer have previously circled the remake, and Ryan Gosling was once attached to star.
Although “Logan’s Run” has achieved cult status over the years, its post-apocalyptic vibe and oh-so-’70s vision of the future have become increasingly familiar through films like “Time Out” and “The Island,” not to mention young-adult franchises like “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.”
Kinberg, meanwhile, has become one of Hollywood’s go-to guys for splashy genre movies. In addition to his “X-Men” duties, he’s also involved with Fox’s “Fantastic Four” reboot and one of Lucasfilm’s standalone “Star Wars” movies. Now we’ll see if he can get “Logan’s Run” back on track.
