Rob Marshall (“Chicago,†“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tidesâ€) is directing the film, which is based on the 1987 musical by James Lapine (who also wrote the screenplay) and composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics.
