‘Carol,’ ‘Danish Girl,’ ‘Tangerine’ and ‘Transparent’ among 2016 GLAAD Media Awards nominees

Dramas about a lesbian love affair (“Carol) and a transgender pioneer (“The Danish Girlâ€) were among the film nominees for this year’s 27th GLAAD Media Awards. Also nominated for best film are the Inglewood-set dramedy “Dope,†same-sex benefits drama “Freeheld†and Lily Tomlin-starrer “Grandma.â€

The LGBT advocacy group, which announced 101 nominees in 20 English-language categories and 46 Spanish-language nominees in 11 categories on Wednesday, recognizes and honors a wide array of media for their “fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBT community and the issues that affect their lives.â€

Indie films “Tangerine,†“52 Tuesdays,†“Appropriate Behavior,†“Boy Meets Girl†and “Drunktown’s Finest†were nominated in the category of films in limited release.

On the TV side, a wider net of nominees was cast: The CW’s comic-book drama “Arrow,†Starz’s swashbuckling “Black Sails,†Fox’s hip-hop drama “Empire,†ABC Family’s “The Fosters,†ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,†“How to Get Away with Murder†and “Nashville,†BBC America’s clone saga “Orphan Black,†Netflix’s “Sens8†and Showtime’s “Shameless†are up for the drama series award.

In comedy, GLAAD nominated Fox’s cop comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,†MTV’s “Faking It,†HBO’s “Looking,†Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie,†“Master of None†and “Orange is the New Black,†ABC’s “Modern Family,†Amazon’s “Transparent,†PBS’ “Vicious†and Pivot’s “Please Like Me.â€

“How to Get Away With Murder†and “Transparent†took the TV prizes last year.

ABC’s “20/20†is also up for an accolade for Diane Sawyer’s groundbreaking interview with Caitlyn Jenner ahead of Jenner’s debut on the cover of Vanity Fair. And reality programs including E!’s “I Am Cait†and TLC’s “I Am Jazz†are also nominated, along with various talk show segments, TV specials and newspaper articles, including one from the Los Angeles Times — David Zucchino’s article “Navy’s First Openly Gay SEAL Builds His Life Anew.â€

The organization also nominated several Spanish-language programs and gave a nod to Ricky Martin’s new album “A quien quiera escuchar.â€

“This year’s nominees have raised the bar for creating thoughtful and diverse LGBT images and storylines, deepening audiences’ understanding of LGBT people and accelerating acceptance across the world,†said GLAAD CEO & President Sarah Kate Ellis in a statement.

The 27th GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will take place in in Los Angeles on April 2 at the Beverly Hilton and in New York on May 14 at the Waldorf Astoria New York. They’ll also be televised on Logo.
