The band members of Buena Vista Social Club are headed back to the big screen to say goodbye.

Sixteen years after Wim Wenders’ eponymous documentary about the Cuban music group debuted, the follow-up, “Buena Vista Social Club — Adios,†is poised to begin production, Broad Green Pictures announced Friday.

Directed this time by Lucy Walker (“Waste Land,†“The Crash Reelâ€), the film will follow the five original band members on their farewell world tour, which is to include a stop in Los Angeles and culminate in a series of homecoming shows in Havana.

Recounting personal and professional highs and lows since 1999, when Wenders’ Oscar-nominated documentary propelled the group to international recognition, “Adios†will also pay tribute to band mates who have passed away.

The announcement of the film comes against the backdrop of the U.S. and Cuba beginning to normalize diplomatic relations after 50 years of acrimony.

Walker said in a statement, “I am honored to follow in the footsteps of such a beloved, popular movie about such beloved, popular artists, and it’s especially fascinating during this important moment in Cuban history.â€
