Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s drama ‘By the Sea’ to open in November

Angelina Jolie Pitt’s drama “By the Sea,” in which she costars with husband Brad Pitt, will come ashore this awards season.

The film, Jolie Pitt’s third as a director and second as a screenwriter, will open Nov. 13 in the U.S., Universal Pictures announced Thursday.

“By the Sea” tells the story of an American writer (Pitt) and his wife (Jolie Pitt) who arrive in a seaside resort in 1970s France with their marriage in crisis. As they spend time with fellow travelers (including newlyweds played by Mélanie Laurent and Melvil Poupaud) and village locals (Niels Arestrup, Richard Bohringer), they begin to come to terms with unresolved issues in their lives.

According to the announcement, the film is inspired by European cinema and theater of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

In a statement, Jolie Pitt — the name she now uses, according to Universal’s announcement — described “By the Sea” as “a story about a relationship derailed by loss, the tenacity of love, and the path to recovery and acceptance.”

The film marks Jolie Pitt’s directorial follow-up to the 2014 World War II drama “Unbroken” and her first time sharing the screen with Pitt since 2005’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

“By the Sea” is currently scheduled to open against Warner Bros’. survival drama “The 33,” Paramount’s horror movie “Rings” and Open Road’s music dramedy “Rock the Kasbah.”
