“I’m Gumby, dammit!” Long before Dipsy of the Teletubbies (sorry, he didn’t make the list) there was another grinning green weirdo in kid’s entertainment – yes, it’s Gumby! Art Clokey’s bendable clay hero was introduced to America on “Howdy Doody” in 1956 and, along with his horse-pal Pokey, he became an enduring American oddball. Eddie Murphy showed Gumby could also be bent in new directions with his memorable “Saturday Night Live” spoofs. Did you know? Gumby was partially based on the Gingerbread Man, a suggestion Clokey got from his wife. (Al Seib / Los Angeles Times)
“I Love Trash.” From a Grinch to a grump, we bring you the garbage genius of Oscar the Grouch, the fuzzy misanthrope of Sesame Street who sings “I Love Trash” and gives everybody a major ration of grief. Oscar is given voice by the great Caroll Spinney, who specializes in sweet and sour – he’s also the voice of Big Bird. Did you know? Oscar has no nose, and that’s probably a good thing. (Lawrence K. “I’ll get you, my pretty!” Many people consider “The Wizard of Oz” to be the pinnacle of Hollywood films and is there a more memorable character than the sinister Witch of the West, portrayed by Margaret Hamilton? The iconic character takes on entirely new layers with the book and stage sensation “Wicked” – her legacy won’t be melting anytime soon. Did you know? Hamilton suffered nasty burns from her copper-based make-up while filming a scene in which she “disappears” amid flame and smoke. (Lawrence K. Ho / Los Angeles Times)
