Well played, Kate and Wills! The names they’ve chosen for their first daughter, born Saturday in London, hit lots of meaningful marks.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana,†William and Catherine announced Tuesday via the Kensington Palace Twitter feed. “The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.â€

“Charlotte†is Aunt Pippa Middleton’s middle name and echoes the given name of the infant’s paternal grandfather, Prince Charles. However, a royal source told the Daily Mail that new parents Catherine and William also just liked the name.

“Elizabeth†is the name of the child’s paternal great-grandmother, who happens to be the current queen of England. Nice work if you can get it. It’s also Kate’s middle name.

Finally, there’s “Diana.†Need we say more? OK, sure: The late Princess Diana, known as the “people’s princess,†would have been 53 now. She was killed in an August 1997 car crash in Paris when William and Prince Harry were 15 and 12, respectively.

Charlotte weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces when she was born at 8:34 a.m. Saturday, London time. She’s now fourth in line to the throne.

The new parents brought their daughter and son George back to Kensington Palace the same day Kate was admitted to the hospital and gave birth, but have since traveled to their private country residence, Anmer Hall, the Los Angeles Times’ London bureau reported.

A 62-gun salute at the Tower of London on Monday afternoon celebrated the baby’s arrival; 41 shots rang out in Hyde Park at the same time.
