Alicia Silverstone offers a way to share vegan breast milk
Alicia Silverstone is helping to prove what we already know, with a new twist: You can get just about anything online. Including a hookup to vegan mamas’ breast milk.
The “Clueless†actress, well-known for her vegan lifestyle and sometimes unusual baby-feeding habits, has started the Kind Mama Milk Share program via her blog, the Kind Life. It’s aimed at pairing vegan women who cannot breast feed their babies with other like-minded individuals who have more “clean, mean, glorious breast milk†than they need.
“[B]ecause we are a community of beautiful souls who recognize the importance of food as health, I say we help support those mamas and babies who need a hand during one of the most important times in their lives,†Silverstone wrote late last month on her blog. “It’s why I’m starting the Kind Mama Milk Share, a way for moms to connect with other moms in their area.
“If you have milk to share -- post it! If you are in need of milk -- post it! Think of all the babies we can help raise together!â€
But the 36-year-old’s exchange isn’t the only game in town. For example, the website Only the Breast hosts both want ads and want-to-sell-or-donate ads for “special needs†breast milk as well, and in comments on the actress’ post solicited vegan women interested in participating in the exchange.
While Silverstone’s exchange is for women willing to share their supply, breast milk for purchase can cost $300 to $1,200 a month, ABC News discovered a couple of years back.
The FDA, however, recommends against using breast milk “acquired directly from individuals or through the Internet,†citing concerns about screening, collection, processing, testing and storage.
Silverstone and husband Christopher Jarecki have one son together, Bear Blu, born in 2011.
