As if determined to avoid the “do any of you even watch TV?†reaction that inevitably accompanies the Round Up of Usual Suspects known as the Emmy nominations, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. produced a jaw-dropping list of Golden Globe nominees on Thursday.

And while it continues the long-standing tradition of Golden Globe wackiness, the list also rather bravely reflects the virtually unmeasurable nature of modern television.

It has so much unpredictability that lives in each episode. You've got these really great actors in Terrence [Howard] and Taraji [P. Henson], and now Jussie [Smollett] and Yazz and Trai [Byers]. They all have such strong character hooks and are delivering. So much so that we ourselves don't know sometimes what’s going to happen. There's a lot of invention that goes on on set everyday.

Last year, it was "Birdman" versus "Boyhood." The year before: "12 Years a Slave" and "Gravity" commanded the conversation. The year before that: "Argo" and "Lincoln" battled it out.

Now that the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations have been announced, the only thing that's clear is that we're going to have to wait for this year's Oscar narrative to come into focus. There are a lot of good movies and performances this year, and critics groups and awards voters have yet to reach any kind of consensus on the best of the best.

Brian Wilson vs. Brian Wilson: Awkward?

Paul Dano and John Cusack both play musician Brian Wilson in "Love & Mercy," but only Dano scored a Golden Globe nomination today. So we had to ask: Is that weird?

Honestly, I feel like we love Brian so much –if one of us doesn’t get recognition, to let that be too much of a bad thing wouldn’t be fair to the work we got to do and the experience we had. Naturally, I’d love to see everybody from the film get recognized. But I think it’s only a good thing if anybody does.

It's Sir-sha, like inertia, Dennis Quaid

There's always someone whose name gets butchered during award show nominations, and today the lucky winner was Irish actress Saoirse Ronan. Golden Globes presenter Dennis Quaid completely mispronounced the "Brooklyn" star's name on live television, calling her "See-sha." The blacklist-era biopic "Trumbo" didn't receive its wished-for comedy category placement, however. The HFPA's eligibility committee moved the film and its cast, which includes Bryan Cranston and Louis C.K., to drama.
