‘World War Z’ swarms DVD and Blu-ray sales and rental charts

The infection caused by “World War Z” has spread from the box office to home entertainment.

The apocalyptic zombie film starring Brad Pitt is the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray title in its first week in release, and it’s also the No. 1 rental.

The movie, based on the fictional oral history by Max Brooks, was a major summer hit for Paramount and director Marc Forster that generated more than $539 million at theaters worldwide.

Last week’s leader, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” directed by J.J. Abrams, fell to No. 2 on the sales chart, followed by “Now You See Me,” starring Jesse Eisenberg.

Also debuting on the sales chart were season sets of the television shows “Arrow” and “Grimm.”

Here are the top titles for the week that ended Sept. 21 for sales and Sept. 22 for rentals, according to Rentrak.
