‘Star Wars’ holds top spot at China box office, hits $100 million

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens†earned $44 million last week at the Chinese box office, topping the charts for a second straight week, film industry consulting firm Artisan Gateway said Tuesday.

Data from China’s official box-office website showed the film, which opened in China on Jan. 9, just crossing the $100-million mark as of Monday evening.

Worldwide, the seventh film in the “Star Wars†franchise has earned more than $1.86 billion.

In second place for the seven days ending Sunday was the Chinese animated film “Boonie Bears 3,†which officially opened Saturday and has earned $20 million to date. Its opening-day take of $8.6 million was a record for a Chinese animated film, Artisan Gateway President Rance Pow said.

“Detective Chinatown†from director Chen Sicheng continued its strong showing. The Wanda Pictures release crossed the $100-million mark last week and had taken in $111.7 million through Sunday.

In fourth place was the new release “Go Fighting,†a TV show spinoff that earned $12 million in its opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five was the Summit Entertainment film “The Last Witch Hunter,†which earned $9.5 million Friday through Sunday.
