Digital Domain to create more holograms of Teresa Teng
Digital Domain is bringing more dead celebrities back to life.
Digital Domain Holdings, the Hong Kong-based owner of the Playa Vista visual effects studio, said it has signed an agreement to produce “3-D virtual performance holograms†of the deceased Taiwanese pop singer Teresa Teng.
Teng, who died in 1995, remains hugely popular across Asia. To keep her image alive, Digital Domain signed a 10-year agreement with TNT Production, a Hong Kong company that controls the rights to Teng, to create holographic images of the singer for use in concerts, movies and other media.
A holographic image of Teng first appeared last year during concerts in Taiwan and Hong Kong by pop star Jay Chou. Teng’s virtual performance was seen by more than 100,000 people and helped pave the way for the partnership, Digital Domain said.
“It is truly an honor for us to preserve and promote the legacy of Miss Teng,†Daniel Seah, chief executive of of Digital Domain Holdings, said in a statement. “We look to continue that close partnership and find ways for her enduring fans, as well as a whole new generation, to experience her talent for many years to come.â€
The deal marks the latest hologram creation from Digital Domain. During the Coachella Valley Music Festival in 2012, the studio stunned audiences with a digital likeness of rap artist Tupac Shakur performing alongside Dr. Dre. The show quickly became news around the world and caught the eye of Chou.
