NEW YORK -- The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Greg Doran had a rather strange welcome to New York when he arrived at JFK on Saturday.

“The oxygen masks came down right when we landed,†said Doran, the man whose company is behind best musical nominee “Matilda,†outside Radio City Music Hall Sunday afternoon before the Tony awards ceremony. “I think it was a sign of the oxygen we’re going to need in the room tonight.â€

There will indeed be people holding their breath at Radio City when the nominees for top musical award are read toward the end of the evening. “Matilda†is vying for the prize with “Kinky Boots†and forecasters say either could walk away with the honor.

Doran said he’s tried not to concern himself with predictions. But he wasn’t worried that the show’s British roots or darker themes would work against it with voters.

“There’s always been a bit of fascination with darker, edgier material from the U.K. here in the States,†he said.

That could be demonstrated in the coming months -- “Matilda†has yet to set its road schedule, but Doran said his 12-time nominated show could be making its way to Los Angeles.

“We’d be delighted to do it,†he said.
