Los Angeles artist Ed Ruscha and Chinese architect Wang Shu have been named to Time magazine’s new list of the 100 most influential people in the world. The annual list, which features personalities from politics, business, sports and culture, was released on Thursday.
Last year, Wang won the Pritzker Prize, the highest honor in the field of architecture. A resident of Hangzhou, located west of Shanghai, Wang has worked almost exclusively in China. His buildings include the Ningbo Museum of Art and the Ningbo Museum of History. Wang is the head of the Architecture School at China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. He also runs a practice with his wife, Lu Wenyu.

In its 100 list, Time describes Wang, 49, as “the rare architect who has successfully blended China’s quest for novel and eye-catching architecture with respect for traditional aesthetics.”
Ruscha, 75, is described by Time art critic Ricard Lacayo as a “genius” and a “faux-naïf funnyman of American art, posing smart riddles about what we think we know.” His long association with Southern California has resulted in many famous works in various media, including the “Standard Station” print.
This year’s 100 list is typically diverse and includes President and Michelle Obama, Daniel Day-Lewis, Aung San Suu Kyi, Beyonce, Pope Francis and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
