Nicole Kidman is stoked to play Lucille Ball in biopic: âSheâs an amazing womanâ
Nicole Kidman is excited to play Lucille Ball, even if fans of Debra Messing might disagree with the âBig Little Liesâ starâs casting.
âI love Lucille, having looked now and delved into her,â Kidman told Variety on Wednesday. âSheâs an amazing woman.â
The casting of the Australia-born actress as the lovable Lucy in Aaron Sorkinâs movie âBeing the Ricardosâ sparked a social media outcry among Messing fans, who cited the sitcom actressâ portrayal of Ball in a recent âWill & Graceâ episode as proof she should play the TV icon.
But Kidman isnât fazed by the Twitter drama. Rather, she was lured by the combination of Sorkinâs dialogue â heâs the writer in addition to directing the Amazon Studios project â and Javier Bardemâs casting as Desi Arnaz.
Debra Messing says sheâs âavailableâ to play Lucille Ball in âBeing the Ricardos,â an Amazon Studios movie thatâs reportedly about to cast Nicole Kidman.
The movie reportedly follows a week in the real life of Ball and Arnaz during which they have a fight that almost derails their marriage.
âIâm very excited for people to see what Aaron found out about her and the way heâs interpreted Desi and Lucy and the way that itâs so rich. I didnât know any of this,â Kidman said.
Fans, egged on by Messingâs retweets, complained a couple of weeks back after Kidman and Bardemâs names were leaked. They compared Messingâs comedic chops to Kidmanâs (unfavorably on the Oscar winnerâs side, obviously) and praised the âWill & Graceâ starâs expressive face.
But Lucie Arnaz, daughter of the âI Love Lucyâ TV stars, defended Kidmanâs casting in a Facebook video a few days later.
âHereâs the deal. You should understand. We are not doing a remake of âI Love Lucy.â No one has to impersonate Lucy Ricardo nor do the Vitameatavegamin routine, or the chocolate factory routine or any of the silly things,â she said. âItâs the story of Lucille Ball, my actual mother, not Lucy Ricardo, and her husband, Desi Arnaz, my dad, not Ricky Ricardo.â
While there will be humor in the film, Arnaz said, itâs more about what went right with the show and wrong with their romance and marriage. âVery little of the show is actually âI Love Lucyâ-type stuff,â she said.
The release date for âBeing the Ricardosâ is unknown. For now, Kidman told Variety, sheâs taking a few months off work
