Man armed with a knife shot, killed by Los Angeles police in Panorama City
A man was fatally shot by Los Angeles police in the San Fernando Valley on Wednesday afternoon after he threatened people with a knife, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 2:20 p.m. in the 8700 block of Tobias Avenue in Panorama City after police responded to a 911 call about a man in his 20s who was threatening people with a knife, said LAPD Officer Carlos Maldonado.
Police at first attempted to de-escalate the situation by using less lethal weapons, but those proved ineffective, LAPD Officer Drake Madison said.
That’s when officers shot the man, he said. It’s unclear how many shots were fired and where the man was hit. Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department declared the man dead at the scene. He was not identified
No one else was injured during the exchange, police said. A knife was recovered at the scene.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said Wednesday it would not file charges against five Inglewood police officers who shot and killed a couple who appeared to be unconscious inside a car in 2016.
