All lanes of 405 Freeway in Redondo Beach being reopened after hazardous chemical spill

Authorities are in the process of reopening all lanes of the 405 Freeway near Redondo Beach and Lawndale after they were shut down because of a hazardous materials spill, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.
Authorities received a call at 11:02 a.m. about the problem, which forced both the north- and southbound lanes to be closed, the CHP said. The onramp to Hawthorne Boulevard also was closed, authorities said.
The CHP said a vehicle carrying thioglycolic acid was involved in a crash, spilling a small amount on the freeway. The Los Angeles County Fire Department originally thought it was hydrogen cyanide, an extremely dangerous and poisonous substance. The lanes were closed, as is standard practice for most spills, CHP said.
By 2:10 p.m., all northbound lanes of the 405 were reopened, and the southbound lanes were expected to reopen shortly, CHP said.
