ClassicMap app brings back Google Maps to Apple iOS 6 -- kind of
Apple iOS 6 users, rejoice. It looks like Google Maps is back. Well, not really.
An iOS developer in Tokyo has made an app called ClassicMap that looks a lot like the Maps app of old.
The app uses Google Maps, shows you your location, lets you zoom in and out, and even drop pins. Perfect, right? Not quite.
Although ClassicMap appears to give us the Maps app used for the first iPhone through the iPhone 4S, it’s missing too many key features to be worth using.
For starters, the app doesn’t give you directions. No driving directions, public transportation directions or walking directions. Nothing.
Apple Maps doesn’t give public transportation directions either, but at least it has walking and driving directions.
ClassicMap is also terrible for searching. If you type in an exact address you should be fine, but if you search for something by name sometimes the app won’t even pretend to search. It’ll just sit there ignoring you like a cat or a teenager.
There may be one good use for the free app though.
Some iPhone users are very upset about losing Google Maps in iOS 6, so what you could do is download the app and pretend you found a way to hack Google Maps back into your device.
Nothing like a good prank.
