Consumer Confidential: V-Day stats, FarmVille grows, Angry Birds
Here’s your take-it-on-the-run Tuesday roundup of consumer news from around the Web:
--Happy Valentine’s Day. Here’s everything you need to know: The average American will shell out $126.03 to mark the holiday, up 8.5% from last year. Jewelry sales are expected to dominate sales, with a collective tally of $4.1 billion. Meanwhile, 72 million Valentine’s Day cards have been purchased by parents for the kids to hand out in the classroom. An estimated 220,000 marriage proposals will be made today. Eight billion Sweethearts conversation hearts will be handed out. About 70% of singles say they’d be happy with a blind date this evening. And just to make sure everyone’s included, about $367 million will be spent today on people’s pets. (Time)
FarmVille is expanding. Zynga, the developer of the popular online game, has cut a deal with Hasbro to extend its brand -- into the real world. Mark Pincus, chief executive of Zynga, says the partnership is a “leap forward in enabling people to connect their virtual and real worlds.†What toys are in the works? That’s still being decided. Hasbro declined to comment on what kinds of products it will make and which Zynga brands will be included. The partnership could include “co-branded merchandise†featuring franchises from both Hasbro and Zynga. (CNN Money)
--Speaking of video games, Facebook has been struck by a flock of Angry Birds. The popular game has debuted on the social network. Rovio Asia senior vice president Henri Holm said the company launched the new version of the game in Jakarta, Indonesia, because it’s the “world’s most Facebook-connected city.†He said he hoped the game could reach more than 800 million users worldwide.
