Macy’s will open doors 48 hours straight before Christmas
Procrastinators rejoice.
Just when you thought the frenzy of Cyber Monday and Black Friday shopping was over, Macy’s said it would expand its tradition of staying open 24 hours a day on the weekend before Christmas.
Starting Dec. 21 at 7 a.m., most Macy’s stores around the country will stay open for 48 hours straight. And 57 stores will welcome customers for another 24 hours after that up until Christmas Eve.
“For the first time ever, Macy’s will keep most stores open around the clock for the last weekend of holiday shopping,†the company said in a statement.
That tops the number of participating stores from last year, when 14 Macy’s stores stayed opened for 83 hours straight while another 27 locations welcomed last-minute shoppers until 2 a.m. The retail giant has been steadily expanding 24 hour pre-Christmas shopping hours since 2006.
That puts pressure on rival retailers to also keep their doors open longer in the hopes of capturing some last minute dollars during the last legs of the crucial holiday shopping season, when companies can rake in up to 40% of their annual sales.
Last year Toys R Us kept all of its stores open for 112 hours straight through Christmas Eve.
So if you forget a gift for an niece or uncle, don’t fret. You’ll probably be able to pop into most places during the middle of the night.
