Times names online arts editor

Lisa Fung, who has overseen the Los Angeles Times’ coverage of arts and culture for more than nine years, has been chosen to run its online entertainment operation.

As online arts and entertainment editor, Fung will guide multimedia coverage including Calendar, the Envelope and Company Town. In addition to developing new online properties, she will oversee more than a dozen latimes.com blogs.

“Lisa is as comfortable within the realm of social media as she is with Wagner, ‘American Idol’ and Warhol, perfectly preparing her for this challenging new position,” Times Editor Russ Stanton said. “Her appointment is a further step in our integrated-newsroom strategy.”

Fung will report to Sallie Hofmeister, who oversees arts and entertainment coverage as assistant managing editor. Until now, the online entertainment group has been part of the newsroom’s Web operation.

Fung joined The Times more than 21 years ago and has driven the paper’s coverage of theater, architecture, classical music, dance and opera. She also established one of The Times’ most popular blogs, Culture Monster, which infuses arts coverage with a pop culture sensibility.

“My hope is that the Los Angeles Times will become the No. 1 destination for arts and entertainment,” Fung said.
