Granada Hills softball team defeats Carson in 12 innings
Granada Hills 2, Carson 1 (12 innings)
Top contributors: Rebecca Patton of Granada Hills struck out 19 and gave up five hits. Carson’s Audrey Devoe broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 12th inning with a single to right field, driving in pitcher Crystal Maas.
The scoop: With two out and two on in the bottom of the 12th, Granada Hills’ Valentina Salinas hit a run-scoring single and Joanna Meir scored the winning run on the play because of a fielding error.
Why it matters: Fourth-seeded Granada Hills gets a chance to avenge a 2-0 semifinal loss last season to top-seeded San Pedro when the teams face off again in a semifinal at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at San Pedro. Seventh-seeded Chatsworth will play at sixth-seeded Wilmington Banning in the other semifinal.
Records: Granada Hills 27-6, Carson 24-10.

BASEBALL GAME OF THE DAY
Oxnard (14-12) at Saugus (15-11), today at 3.
Why it matters: Oxnard was on track to win the Pacific View League until forfeiting six games last week when it was discovered that several players had participated in an adult league. The Yellowjackets advanced to the Southern Section Division I playoffs via a new format that includes teams that finished fourth in their league. Coach Al Tarazon isn’t taking a victory over Saugus in this wild-card game for granted, though; he’s using ace right-hander Mikel Beltran (5-3, 1.52 earned-run average). Saugus finished in third place in the Foothill League.
