Cardinals score five in the ninth to beat Nationals
St. Louis 9, at Washington 4: Rick Ankiel hit a tiebreaking double in St. Louis’ five-run ninth inning. Ryan Zimmerman homered, extending his hitting streak to a Nationals-record 19 games. Before the game, the Cardinals put infielder Brendan Ryan on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Tyler Greene from triple-A Memphis.
at Milwaukee 4, Arizona 1: The Brewers jumped on the Diamondbacks’ bullpen for a four-run seventh after being shut out for six innings by Max Scherzer. The Brewers got their longest -- and best -- outing of the season from starter Jeff Suppan. New Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his second save. It was a hard-luck outing for Scherzer, who struck out seven in a dominant outing but again was denied his first career victory. Scherzer left the game with a 1-0 lead, but the Diamondbacks’ bullpen couldn’t hold on.
at Dodgers 8, San Diego 5: Manny Ramirez and Orlando Hudson homered in the win.
