President Obama asked Americans to get tested for HIV and work to reduce transmission of the virus that causes AIDS.
In a statement marking National HIV Testing Day, Obama said that 1 in 5 Americans who are infected with HIV don’t know it and that testing will limit the spread of AIDS.
HIV infects an American every 9 1/2 minutes, making the health problem an “epidemic,” he added.
“Studies show that once people learn they are infected, they take steps to reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others,” Obama said.
