A bomb planted in a van destroyed a barracks housing police officers and their families in northern Spain, injuring about 60 people and causing major damage in the surrounding area. The Basque separatist group ETA was blamed for the attack.
No warning was phoned in, as ETA typically does before attacks, so authorities were not able to evacuate the 14-story building in Burgos, police said. About 120 people were in the barracks and nearby buildings, a third of them children, when the explosion went off at 4 a.m.
Most of the injuries were from flying glass, and 38 of the wounded were treated in a hospital, the Interior Ministry said. The blast blew off much of the barracks’ facade and hurled the van about 230 feet.
