Re “Counting calories,” Editorial, Aug. 10
The Times does a good job describing how easy it would be for restaurants to put calorie counts on menus. But the law would cover only one-fourth of the nation’s restaurants.
Just as it would be inadequate for only 25% of banks to give financial disclosures, or only 25% of supermarkets to provide nutrition information on food packages, most Americans believe all restaurants should provide calorie labeling -- 71%, according to a June poll by KRC Research. That’s also the position that many nutritionists and restaurant companies support.
Only neighborhood establishments for whom this is truly a burden should be exempt.
