A 15-year-old Long Beach boy has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a 27-year-old man whose iPod he is accused of stealing, authorities said Thursday.
The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office is seeking to try the teenager, who was not identified because he is a minor, as an adult. He was arrested over the weekend and formally charged Wednesday with murder and robbery.
Prosecutors say the April 4 shooting was gang-related. A second suspect was arrested Wednesday but has not been charged.
The victim, Garrett Norris, an engineer from Long Beach, was playing basketball with two friends at Orizaba Park near Spaulding Street and Temple Avenue when he saw two males stealing his belongings, including the iPod, Long Beach police said.
Norris chased the two into an alley, where he was shot in the torso, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
