When you’ve won Broadway’s top award twice and directed one of the most popular stage musicals ever made, your next career move is to land at a regional theater in sleepy beachfront Ventura, right?
Apparently so. Tony-winning director John Caird (“Les Miserablesâ€) has signed on to write and direct a new musical that is scheduled to open in October at the Rubicon Theatre.
“Daddy Long Legs†is a two-character musical adapted from the popular 1912 children’s novel by Jean Webster. It tells the story of a young orphan girl and her epistolary relationship with a mysterious benefactor.
Caird is writing the book for the show and will stage this world premiere production. He has won the Tony Award twice -- in 1982 for directing “The Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby†and in 1987 for “Les Miserables.†Both times he shared the award with Trevor Nunn.
Paul Gordon will compose the music and the score.
The musical starts previews at the Rubicon on Oct. 14 and runs through Nov. 8.
