Today
Big plane: Qantas Airways’ huge Airbus A380 will land at Los Angeles International Airport. The airplane is scheduled to land at 7:30 a.m. At 10 a.m., Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, actor John Travolta and Qantas Airways Chief Executive Geoff Dixon will speak at an arrival ceremony.
Transportation talk: The seventh annual Southern California Transportation Summit will be held. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina are among those invited to speak.
Library opening: Authors Ray Bradbury and Eva Brown are scheduled to attend the grand opening of the Learning Resources Center at the El Camino College Schauerman Library.
Mystery at sea: Jury deliberations will begin in the trial of Skylar Deleon, who is accused of murdering Tom and Jackie Hawks by tossing them off their boat, while at sea, in order to steal the yacht they advertised for sale.
Tuesday
Women meet: California First Lady Maria Shriver will host the Women’s Conference 2008 at the Long Beach Convention Center. This year’s theme is “Be Who You Are.”
Fires: The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors discusses proposals to deal with power lines in the wake of last week’s fires in the San Fernando Valley.
Wednesday
Carona case: Questioning of potential jurors will begin in the case of former Orange County Sheriff Michael S. Carona, who is accused of misusing his office in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and financial gifts.
Thursday
Human relations honorees: The Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission will hold its 2008 John Anson Ford Human Relations Awards presentation. Honorees include the Juvenile Justice Task Force for its work in the 3rd Supervisory District, Rabbi Harold Schulweis, Youth Radio, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co. and Shirley Harbeson, senior manager of Lockheed’s equal opportunity programs.
Friday
UC Irvine groundbreaking: The groundbreaking for Sue and Bill Gross Hall, a stem-cell research facility, will be held at UC Irvine near the Hewitt Research Hall. The facility will house 15 principal researchers and their teams who will do basic stem-cell research as well as work on applications of stem-cell medical technology, including regenerative medicine and drug development.
Saturday
Own a piece of McQueen: Steve McQueen memorabilia, including his first racing trophy, Buddha-figure golf cuff links given by Bob Hope and original signed contracts for the films “Bullitt” and “Papillion,” will be auctioned off at Bonhams & Butterfields’ annual vintage motorbike, custom car and sports-racing collectibles auction at Petersen Auto Museum.

What was the final toll of the Sesnon fire, which burned last week around Porter Ranch?
The fire burned 14,703 acres, destroyed 15 homes and 63 outbuildings, and damaged 11 structures. Additionally, 41 vehicles were lost. The nearby Marek fire burned 4,824 acres, destroyed 38 homes and damaged six others.
