* St. Louis 3, at New York 0: The Mets had only three hits off Joel Pineiro and Jason Isringhausen in losing for the 10th time in 14 games and falling into a first-place tie in the East with Philadelphia. New York, which had a seven-game lead on Sept. 12, has lost seven in a row at home. No major league team has failed to finish first after having at least a seven-game lead with 17 to play. “We’re tied now, so now we’ve got three games to get it done,” Mets Manager Willie Randolph said. “That’s the way baseball goes and we kind of made our own bed here so we’ve got to fight through this.” The Mets’ Pedro Martinez (3-1) threw a season-high 105 pitches in seven innings in his fifth start since shoulder surgery last October.
* San Diego 9, at Milwaukee 5: The Brewers made five errors, their most in eight years, and Scott Hairston hit a tiebreaking, three-run double to lead the Padres, who maintained their one-game lead in the wild-card race and stayed a game behind Arizona in the West. Third baseman Ryan Braun made three errors for Milwaukee, which stayed two games behind Chicago in the Central Division.
* at Florida 6, Chicago 4: The Cubs stranded 10 runners and lost to the Marlins for the third game in a row. Chicago’s magic number to clinch the division is two. Hanley Ramirez hit his 29th home run for Florida, and Jeremy Hermida had two hits and finished the series seven for 12. The Marlins beat the Cubs for the 10th straight game over the last two seasons.
* Arizona 8, at Pittsburgh 0: Micah Owings, a last-minute replacement for Brandon Webb, gave up four hits, struck out four and walked none in 6 1/3 innings and also went four for four with three doubles and three runs batted in for the Diamondbacks. Arizona Manager Bob Melvin held back Webb because of a forecast for rain. Webb will pitch tonight in Colorado.
* at Philadelphia 6, Atlanta 4: The Phillies’ Ryan Howard struck out for the 196th time to set the major league record for a season. The Reds’ Adam Dunn struck out 195 times in 2004.
* Houston 4, at Cincinnati 3: Carlos Lee’s run-scoring single in the ninth inning broke a tie.
* Colorado 10, at Dodgers 4: The Rockies’ 11th consecutive win kept them a game behind the Padres in the wild-card race.
