at San Antonio 106, Portland 97: Receiving their championship rings before tipoff, the Spurs opened defense of their title successully, with Tim Duncan finishing with 24 points and 13 rebounds in a game that was supposed to match him against rookie Greg Oden, sidelined by knee surgery.
Utah 117, at Golden State 96: Carlos Boozer had 32 points and 15 rebounds, Deron Williams scored 24 points and the Jazz outrebounded the Warriors, 56-37, while scoring at will in the paint and constantly capitalizing on turnovers.
Houston 95, at Lakers 93: Kobe Bryant scored 45 points, but Shane Battier won the game with a late three-point basket.
