Free town hall meeting on arts funds

A statewide campaign to address healthcare reform and arts funding will be launched Saturday at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in downtown Los Angeles.
Organizers say they expect more than 760 participants, including artists, policymakers and arts advocates and funders, to attend the free L.A. Arts Town Hall meeting, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is among those scheduled to speak.
“California is the most populous state in the nation, and it has the lowest arts budget in the nation,” said Cora Mirikitani, president of Los Angeles’ Center for Cultural Innovation, one of the event’s organizers. “Health insurance is one of the most pressing needs for working artists in this community and throughout the state. But the event as a whole is about the entire arts community’s future -- its challenges and needs.”
Mirikitani said afternoon workshops will focus on such topics as grants, marketing, networking and business ventures outside the nonprofit sector.
