Sean Avery, in his first home game since being acquired from the Kings, scored his first goal as a member of the New York Rangers, helping them defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-0, Friday night at Madison Square Garden to end a four-game losing streak.
Avery’s goal at 14:25 of the second period was his 11th of the season. Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves for his second shutout this season and New York, in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, moved to within five points of the Lightning, which occupies the eighth and final playoff spot.
It was the Rangers’ best scoring output since before their losing streak. In their previous nine games, they scored 20 goals and went 3-6.
Edmonton 2, Chicago 1 -- The host Oilers have won four of their last six to move ahead of Colorado for ninth place in the Western Conference, six points out of a playoff spot.
