Mayor faces other issues than schools

Re “Villaraigosa won’t give up on schools,” April 18

Perhaps now that Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has had his head delivered to him on a legal platter once more by a state appeals court, he will cease and desist from his illegal and misguided attempt at a takeover of the Los Angeles Unified School District. We all want to improve our schools, but as the ruling stated, Villaraigosa’s attempt “is nothing more than an end-run around the Constitution.” Why is he continuing to waste money on what is clearly an unjustified and illegal play for control of the schools? Villaraigosa should worry more about our city’s budget and civic responsibilities. It would be better if the mayor concentrated on making our streets safer for children to walk to school before he talks again about running our schools.

Thank you, 2nd District Court of Appeal, for many reasons:

* Giving the mayor control through this bill bypassed the voters and parents of L.A.

* Who knows if every future mayor would be qualified to be in charge of the schools?

* If Villaraigosa really wants to take charge of the school system, let him apply to be school superintendent after first doing a good job as mayor.
