DNA Tests Planned to Help Fight Bay Pollution

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky on Thursday detailed a $1-million plan to detect and alleviate sources of bacteria in Malibu that are polluting the Santa Monica Bay.
Officials will use DNA tests and other measures to see if the pollutants’ origin is animal or human and pinpoint the sources. Widespread use of septic tanks in Malibu is believed to contribute to the contamination.
The effort, co-sponsored by Supervisor Don Knabe, was spurred by abysmal water-quality ratings for county beaches by the group Heal the Bay.
