Democrat drops recount effort
Democratic challenger Larry Kissell conceded defeat in Charlotte to Republican Rep. Robin Hayes, after an initial phase of a hand recount showed the result of the midterm vote would probably not change.
Kissell conceded after five of the 10 counties in the district had completed the hand recount of sample precincts that he requested. He picked up two votes, but would have needed a total of about 10 to trigger a full recount.
“After today’s recounts, I offer Congressman Hayes a belated congratulation for his victory,†Kissell said in a statement. He also said he was starting his 2008 congressional bid immediately. Kissell lost by a little more than 300 votes.
