Solving Sherlock

THE biggest “mystery” in Irene Wanner’s review of “Sherlock Holmes: The Unauthorized Biography” [“Holmes’ Final Mystery Solved”, Nov. 11] is how she could fail to even mention the very best work on the subject.

“Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street: A Life of the World’s First Consulting Detective” was written in 1962 by the great Holmesian scholar William S. Baring-Gould and is as entertaining and essential as his magnum opus, “The Annotated Sherlock Holmes.”

Not acknowledging Baring-Gould’s preeminent account of the master’s life is an omission so “elementary,” I can only attribute it to the insidious machinations of Professor Moriarty.
